From
Emily Hanlon and The Fiction Writer's Journey
Contest
Rules, Guidelines and Prizes, Judges and Submissions
You
can compete in both categories: Fiction and Memoir/Personal Essay. (No
poetry please. Our judges are not professional poets.)
No
submissions over 2000 words.
There
will be winners in both categories
for all prize levels!
First Prizes -- Winners' Choice $100
or a private coaching session on the phone with Emily Hanlon, valued at $150.
Emily will read up to 50 double-spaced pages. You can send fewer pages
but not more.
I
intend to publish all winners in an E-book, but this is not a promise.
If you are interested in helping to put together such an E-book, please let me
know.
Entry
Deadline: Wednesday, December 21, 2005. The Winter Solstice. Entry
fee of $15 per submission
Preparing
Your Entry: Please
read all the guidelines carefully or your entry may be disqualified.
Entries
must be submitted online or mailed in. (Although entry fees can be made by check
or credit card. Directions below.)
Please
copy and paste your submission into the body of the e-mail. Do not send as an
attachment. You
will be sent further submission details as soon as we receive your entry fee(s).
Here are some guidelines:
Please
check your manuscript for spelling and other errors. I recognize that you are
a creative writer and may have trouble picking up errors in your own work. If
you are like me and blind to typos and dropped words, have someone with a good
eye for such matters read over your submission.
Please
check that you have indented paragraphs. These are the most tedious to reformat.
All
manuscripts must have the category and word count indicated along with your name,
address, phone number, e-mail and a word count. Do not include the title, your
name, e-mail and mailing address in your word count. If you are entering more
than one manuscript, do this for each entry.
If
you are mailing in your entry(s) by snail mail, send two copies. Do not
put your name, etc. on any pages of the entry. Put all your personal information
on a separate page. You will receive the snail mail address as soon as you submit
your fee.
Entries
exceeding the 2000 word limit by more than 25 words will be disqualified.
Your
entry must be original and in English.
You
may submit as many entries as you like. There is a $15 fee for each story. There
are no refunds once you submit your entry fee(s).
The
Fiction Writer's Journey retains only one-time publication rights to the First
Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, and Honorable Mention Winners in each category
which extends to a possible e-book publication. The e-book will be free and you
can pass it along to others. All other rights revert to you.
Every
entry will be read by the judges. Judges'
decisions are final. Judges reserve
the right to re-categorize entries. Entries must be received by Wednesday,
December 21, 2005. That is the Winter Solstice. Manuscripts
will not be returned.
Once
you have submitted your entry fee, you will be given directions for submitting
your entry as well as your welcome gift: Finding
Your Writer's Voice.
Submit
your entry fee(s). By
submitting the entry fee you acknowledge that you understand and accept all the
terms and conditions enumerated above on this page.
Each
story submitted is $15.
You do not need to submit them all at the same time. This
link is sometimes slow to connect. Please be patient.
