Reviews of The Harbor Light Inn

Marblehead, Massachusetts

Magazine and Newspaper Reviews:

"In the historic section of Marblehead, the Harbor Light Inn is a rare find - an exquisite place to stay in the heart of a charming, walkable residential district."~ BOSTON MAGAZINE

"Marblehead may bill itself as the yachting capital of the world, but even folks who get seasick in the bathtub will fall in love with this quaint seaside community and its Harbor Light In. ~VACATIONS MAGAZINE

"Just 15 miles north of Boston, The Harbor Light Inn in historic Marblehead makes a perfect holiday hideaway. The blue-grey clapboard building is tucked away on a narrow street near the sea in this pretty village…This sparkling inn boasts polished wood floors, oriental rugs, silver ice buckets, and chintz chairs, while contrastingly modern bathrooms contain huge mirrors, skylights, and some Jacuzzi tubs. The Harbor Light's location between Boston and the fascinating old port of Salem, famous for witch-hunts and wealthy sea captains, makes it a great base from which to visit some of New England's best-known historic landmarks." ~ EXPRESSION (American Express Magazine)

"Marblehead's best known lodging…the Harbor Light Inn built in 1729, …the Harbor Light Inn, also a bed and breakfast, is smack in the middle of the old town, an easy walk to the historic houses, the harbor, shops and restaurants. Its backyard looks over a wooded park and the harbor in the distance." ~ NEW YORK SUNDAY TIMES

Personal reviews found on tripadvisor.com, a source I have found reliable:

"A wonderful inn in a great town. If you want to get away with the one you love for a great escape from the routine, this is the place! The Harbor Light Inn is elegantly appointed with something special in every room (we got to peek at several rooms and were so impressed). Breakfast offered far more than we expected, and the Inn's staff was eager to make sure our stay was special... Marblehead is truly one of the most unique towns in the country offering the largest collection of pre-1800 owner occupied homes in the country, specialty shops with surprisingly good prices, and a sense of history befitting the "Home of the American Navy"!

"Fantastic place to stay when planning a trip to or near Marblehead Ma. The inn is a historical treasure with all the amenities of a new resort. We plan to return again. Thanks to the great folks there for making our us feel as if we were at home."

"There was so much attention to detail and the staff could not possibly be more helpful. Restaurants are within walking distance and the breakfast at the Inn was fantastic. The room was beautiful and cozy with our fireplace going on a snowy night. There are many shops and stores nearby so we walked everywhere. We highly recommend this wonderful spot."

More on the Marblehead Christmas Walk and Other Attractions

The first weekend in December, the shops and restaurants play host to a town-wide open house designed to spark holiday shopping and the warmth of community neighborliness. The town comes out to enjoy this annual event with holiday spirit and warm community neighborliness. Santa even arrives in Marblehead by lobster boat. And many of the town’s churches host afternoon and evening concerts. Sing or listen to Christmas carols by candlelight in the brisk air in a quaint New England seacoast town as the lights of the town tree blink on for the first time. So begins the annual Marblehead Christmas Walk in Marblehead, Massachusetts, part party, part historical tour, and part shopping festival.

Traditional events include the Christmas Tree lighting Friday evening, the arrival by boat of Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday morning, and the Christmas Walk Parade.

And, of course, there's a Cemetery!

Old Burial Hill is one of the most picturesque graveyards in New England. It affords a view of Old Marblehead, the harbor, and the sea. Established in 1638 at the site of Marblehead’s first meeting house, it's the burial site of an estimated 600 Revolutionary soldiers, although only a few of those graves are marked.

The graveyard has many well preserved headstones, some dating back to the seventeenth century. Their carvings exemplify artistic and religious expression of the Puritan period, and their epitaphs reflect the times of these settlers, sea captains, fishermen, wives and children.
