Love After Love, a poem

by Derek Walcott, 1996 Nobel Prize winner for literature

The time will come, when,
with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door,
in your own mirror.
And each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, “Sit here, Eat. Relax.”
You will love again this stranger who is your Self.
Give wine. Give bread.
Give back your heart,
to itself,
to this stranger who has loved you
all your life.
whom you ignored for another,
but who knows you by heart.

  • i love this poem, derek walcott really captures many emotions on learning to love yourself after a seperation of a relationship. i love the way how he reaches to find your own personal identity.
