The freedom to enjoy the challenge of creativity while we write is vital for fiction writers, but all too often we focus on our limitations instead of the vast potential of our imagination.
When this happens, we walk the narrow channels of what we think we should write instead of seeing the potential and possibilities of the stories and characters who wait for us to throw open the doors of the creative unconscious and invite them onto the pages of our stories. After having had eight works of fiction published by major New York publishers, I can say without hesitation, I never write the book I think I am going to write. Sure I lose my way (as every writer does or should) and I write a lot of messy first draft writing (as every writer does or should), but by trusting the journey and the gifts of the unconscious, I discover the real story I wanted to, needed to write. |
"I read your critique of my novel last night. Amazing how you picked up the things I felt weren’t there, yet didn’t know why or what to do about them. You have been a great teacher and friend. I'm sure there are others like me who would be trapped in our minds and darkness if you hadn't coaxed us, with your sincere encouragement and non-judgment." ~ Susan Omilian
