A Two-Hour Introductory Program For Beginning Writers
Welcome Beginning Writers! It's here where you'll finally meet all of the extraordinary characters who live within your imagination, journey together to new and distant lands, and go on the adventures of your lifetime!
I've been a fiction writing teacher for 30 years and I know that first and foremost, writing fiction is an incredibly potent expression of your creativity and your relationship to yourself.
The journey into fiction writing is different for everyone, so my approach to working with my students is very different from a one-size fits all. But the one common characteristic shared by everyone I work with is they all know deep inside that fiction writing is something they must do.
Even if writing fiction is as yet only a dream for them, they still know that if they don’t write, a vital part of them will slowly fade and eventually wither away. And it will. Why? Because for fiction writers it isn't the perfectly turned phrase that we ache to express. Rather, it is about unleashing the imagination and finally setting free those characters and stories that we knew lived inside us but never understood how to set them free. Doing so is one of the greatest joys a fiction writer can have! The imagination is our life blood. It is our uniqueness and the ultimate expression of who we really are and always have been.
What Happens In This Two-Hour Lesson? Based on my reading of the pages you've sent me, I begin the lesson by explaining what you're doing well as a fiction writer, and where we need to focus our work. We then discuss The Five Ingredients of the scene, writer's technique, character development, silencing your Inner Critic, and more! Oh, and we also have a lot of fun. Fiction writing should be fun! We're in the world of the imagination. What's more fun than that?
What Do You Need to Send Me Before We Have Our Two-Hour Lesson? To prepare for the two-hour lesson, you send me up to fifty double-spaced pages of your writing. But don't panic if you don't have fifty pages to send me! As little as three or four pages is fine. Once I've read what you've sent, your writing becomes the departure point for the two-hour discussion.
Who Do I Work With? I work with all levels of writers around the world, from the US to Australia, Korea, England, Germany and France, and from beginners to published novelists. I'm fascinated by early drafts. I love works-in-progress because they are fertile with unrealized potential.
This special two-hour session can be in person or on the phone, and our session can be recorded.
