My Method of Teaching
I'm a novelist with a passion for teaching my students how to unleash their stories and put them down on the seemingly unfriendly page. I know how to do this: I've been a writing coach for 30 years. On this retreat, you'll create unforgettable characters and page-turning stories!
I teach my students writing technique using The Five Ingredients of the Scene.
Through this technique, you learn the power of the five ingredients by writing. I never teach in the abstract. I am not someone who stands in front of a class and didactically talks about fiction writing technique. You learn by doing, and understanding naturally follows.
During our sessions on this seven day writing retreat, we often work with your first draft material. I love first draft material because it hold such hidden gems and the possibilities are cosmic!
What I tell all new students and retreat participants is that having fun while you write is perhaps the most important aspect of our work.
When you're having fun exploring characters and story line, when you're happily opening up the jewels that lay hidden in your early drafts, when you're taking risks with your writing and not caring what your Inner Critic thinks, then you're home free! This is where my teaching and support takes you!
Not everyone who comes on my writing retreats has written before. If you're thinking about joining this retreat and haven't yet written anything, use these writing prompts to begin your journey. A few pages is all it takes!
The 5 Ingredients Of The Scene...
"Working on my novel with Emily has been an amazing revelation. I had no idea such wonderful characters and stories were inside me. I invariably finish each phone session inspired and energized toward more and more writing. Emily deepens and widens my creativity and intensifies my connection to the muse."
~ Chris Simon
