How Long Does The Process Take And How Much Does It Cost?
Most manuscripts take me between six weeks to two months to read, depending on the length. I never work on more than one project at a time, so my attention is fully on your book. If we work together, I want to make sure you get your money's worth. I'm different from other Book Doctors who just read manuscripts without commenting on the pages.

Instead, once they finish their reading, they'll simply send a critique in an essay form, often giving only overarching ideas on what works and what doesn't work in your book. I do so much more! Central to how I work as a Book Doctor is to read your manuscript on the computer, which allows to me to comment and make suggestions through the Word Review function. This makes it much easier for you to incorporate these suggestions and edits directly into your manuscript.

After you've gotten your edited manuscript back and looked at all the notes, we then have a two-hour phone call. This allows us to have a deeply interactive discussion about what works and what doesn't. This call is included in my Book Doctoring process.

What Are The Prices For The Book Doctoring Process?
  • Initial Session With Emily: The fee for this hour is $150. If, after we talk, you hire me as your Book Doctor, I apply the $150 toward the final fee and this session becomes free.
  • Book Doctor: I charge .08 a word for my Book Doctoring services, and a typical 300 page manuscript (double-spaced) is approximately 75,000 words. For a 300 page manuscript, my Book Doctoring fee would be $6,000.
  • Line Editing: For reasons explained below, line editing your manuscript should happen only after the  Book Doctoring process has been completed. I charge .02 a word for line editing if you want it, but remember, I have already corrected any typos and grammar as I saw them during the Book Doctoring process.
What Are The Six Steps We Take During The Book Doctoring Process?
The professional developmental edit that happens during the Book Doctoring process can make the difference between landing a book deal or not. It can also be the difference that creates a truly polished presentation to your readers if you self-publish.

My process for a developmental edit always encourages and supports you as a writer. I know that I'd never be the successful writer I am today if not for the personalized teaching and inspiration I received from the professional editors. These editors felt impassioned to make me the best writer I could be as they worked on my manuscripts, and this is what I want to do for you!

Step One: My Book Doctoring process begins with an hour conversation, during which time I learn what you're aiming for in your writing. You can ask me any questions you like. I want you to feel comfortable that you're putting your manuscript in the best hands possible with me! The fee for this hour is $150 and includes my reading fifty double-spaced. If, after we talk, you hire me as your Book Doctor, I apply the $150 toward the final fee and the first hour becomes free.

Step Two: You then email me your manuscript and I begin my work. This takes anywhere from six weeks to two months.

Step Three: Through the Word Review function, I show my comments and suggestions in the relevant places throughout your manuscript. When I am done with my developmental edit, I email you back the edited manuscript. (The Review function in Word is very easy and if you don't know or understand it, I'm happy to show you how it works.)

Step Four: Now that you have the edited version of your manuscript, you go over the entirety of it at your own pace. Some of my comments are quite technical in nature, while others are designed to teach, illuminate, and inspire you. Whether you agree with all of my suggestions or not, our relationship does not end when I send you back the manuscript!

Step Five: Whenever you're ready, we have a two-hour consultation. Coming up to the two-hour session, you can send me notes about what you want to discuss. For example, my review may have inspired deep changes in a character, plot line, or the structure of your novel about which you feel really excited, but you don't yet understand how to fully integrate it all. Or you may not agree with a suggestion and want to discuss that. This two-hour consultation is something you do not see offered by other Book Doctors.

Step Six: Some people may want to continue working on their novel after this two-hour discussion, while others are ready to begin looking for an agent or start the process of self publishing. I can help you in any of these areas, at a reduced hourly rate.

I now have a completed novel that is far beyond my wildest expectations... "I hired Emily Hanlon as a writing coach to help me complete my first novel. It was in draft state and I needed help me figure out how to convey my complex storyline. It was immediately apparent that she understood the deepest emotionality of the story's message and intuitively knew how to help me access my own unconscious creative process. Suddenly, I was discovering critical new characters that were driving the tale into surprising directions. From beginning to end, thanks to Emily's probing and meaningful insights, I experienced the joy of seeing myself evolve as a writer. I now have a completed novel that is far beyond my wildest expectations!" ~ Jackie Bennett
