Women's Fiction: How and When to Use Flashback In Your Scene
I love this picture as a flashback. It holds so much emotion, happiness, and love. But what if the relationship has fallen apart and she's thinking about how beautiful their love once had been?
Where is she when she is having the flashback? What causes her to remember this time? How long ago did the flashback take place? Is she now in her eighties and has he just died and she's thinking back on their life? Why does she remember about this moment?
Once you're in the flashback, let it open like any other scene. You have her point of view. What's the dramatic tension of the flashback? Use dialogue. How does she remember the setting? Is she different because of what happened in this flashback? Does her memory of this time in their lives give her hope?
These are just "What Ifs" to swirl the deep waters of your imagination. What does this picture open for you? More important, what does it open for your character?
