In-Person Writing Classes In Yorktown, NY:
Price For Ten Classes: $500
I approach teaching this class, which meets once a week, in the same way as my One-on-One work. However, because there are four to six people in a class, there’s less time devoted to each individual’s story or book than we have during One-on-One coaching. A Group Class does have its own unique feature -- the different insights about your work that are offered by the other members.

A Group Class does have its own unique feature -- the different insights about your work that are offered by the other members.
This feature has two benefits:
- When you're critiquing another’s work, you yourself grow as a writer. You develop insights that you can apply to your own work as well as to the work of others.
- Receiving input from three to five other writers, as well as from me, sometimes does wonders in advancing your work.
For those who live within driving distance of my home in Westchester, I offer an in-person class that meets once a week, for ten-week sessions. This class is limited to six members, which is small enough that we can listen to and discuss everybody’s writing from the prior week. So long as your work falls within one of the seven genres that I teach, and your participation would be consistent with the culture of our class (see below), we’d love to have you join us.
Our culture is one of mutual understanding, interest, and support. Our critiquing of each other’s work is based on this, and more specifically, based on a key concept of my coaching – that whatever you have written, no matter how much it may seem to be missing the mark, has hidden jewels that we uncover.

"I came to Emily's writing group with a burning desire to write fiction, but was unsure if I was able. I soon found out that you learn about writing not by being told, "Do this, do it that way," but by writing, page after page, character after character, and you see things evolve in ways that surprise you. You learn to become a character, to see the world through their eyes, say things they would say, and in so doing, tap into unknown parts of yourself." ~ Michael Weinstein |
In a way, we are each other’s writing coach. If you work with me individually, whether in person or on the phone, you get me. If you join our class, you get me plus three to five others! And you yourself will become a coach. You’d be amazed at how much it can help your own writing by helping others mine the unpolished gems lying within their work!
I think the best way to understand the culture of our class is to know how long our current members have been together – from five to thirty years in the class! One member drives two hours each way to attend! So it’s not just my teaching, which I can do equally well on the phone! It’s our bonding over our fiction writing, and the way in which we support each other as writers, that make our group so unique!
But you don’t need to sign up for thirty years… our sessions are ten weeks long. I’ve had a number of students who join our class for just one or two sessions, and then prefer to work with me privately, either in person or on the phone. It’s simply a matter of what works best for each person at a particular point in his or her fiction writing journey.
