Unlocking The Five Ingredients Of The Scene In Historical Fiction

The goal for this free exercise is to write five scenes in your Historical Fiction story. The previous page leads you through writing a scene where Point of View is your focus.

Working from that first scene, these prompts will help you write four more scenes, with each one building on the story.

By the end of this exercise, you will have anywhere from ten to twenty pages written. These pages could form a chapter, or they could form individual scenes for a novel.

  • Picture Prompt One: Let’s edit it to make the dialogue really work!
  • Picture Prompt Two: We’ll come back again and make sure there’s enough dramatic tension to make the reader really want to turn the page.
  • Picture Prompt Three: We’ll make sure that we’ve fully described both the setting and the mood of the scene.
  • Picture Prompt Four: After establishing your scene’s mood, we might even use flashback as a device for explaining why this setting evokes a particular mood in your character’s emotions.

Remember, if you can write one good scene, you can write the next and the next, until you have a chapter. One chapter, then another, and another, and you’ll have a book! In the process, you may need help with your plot and characters. For this, you’ll find my other techniques -- What If? and Open The Door… And The Characters Will Walk Through! — equally helpful.

If at any point in creating your mystery scene, you feel uncertain about how to proceed, give me a call and we can talk about where you’re at and what’s not working. There's no obligation!
