The Mentoring Program

Emily And You: Walking The Path Of The Fiction Writer
A Mentoring Program For All Levels Of Writers

How to Finish a Novel
Finishing A Manuscript Is The Goal
I designed my Manuscript Mentoring Programs for people who are committed to completing the first draft of a manuscript.

Whatever your level of writing experience, this is an incredible goal and one that is attainable!

My years of experience as a writing coach and published novelist have shown me that it is much more important to write the entire first draft of a 300-450 page manuscript than it is to focus on far fewer pages and try to make those pages "perfect".
The reason for this is that many ideas about your characters and plot can be seen only from the vantage point of the finished first draft of a manuscript. My experience allows me to look at your first draft and effectively see how to integrate the various plots, more fully develop your characters, and improve individual scenes.

The Mentoring Program and How It Works
The first thing we do is work out a writing schedule for you, because nothing happens if you don’t write!

While this may seem like an obvious step to take, what I have found is that even with the best of intentions, many people don't write enough throughout the week.

As our work together on your first draft continues, we do not focus on endlessly editing and polishing your manuscript while you're writing.
Believe it or not, completing a 300-450 page draft in a year is quite possible if my student remains dedicated to the writing schedule we set. It’s only 8-12 pages a week. A big part of my job as your writing mentor is to use my own experience to keep you moving on!

Another crucial job I have is to guide the emergence of the structure of your manuscript. It’s very hard to put a structure on the novel while you're writing your first draft. You can’t tell the novel what its structure is; you have to watch the structure emerge and evolve. This is not always easy, but it's something I know well and will teach you.
One Of My Great Passions In Life Is Helping Fiction Writers. I come alive when working with you. I'm inspired by your own commitment to your writing, the way you persevere, take on challenges, sometimes stumble and fall and other times, succeed.  And when you do stumble or fall, I'm here to help you brush off the dirt, bandage a bloodied knee, pick up the pen and resume your writing.
Bottom Line: I Won't Let You Quit Writing.
Regardless of whether you've written or not, we talk up to two times a week, more if you need. If I don't hear from you, I'll email or call you.

Imagine this scenario: You’re writing away, suddenly everything you've written sounds like garbage, and you find yourself in a downward spiral. You contact me immediately.

When we talk, I’ll remind you that you've forgotten this truth -- nothing you write is ever garbage. Rather, what you dismiss as garbage may be the fertile ground from which your characters and stories grow. We’ll explore this so-called garbage and shine the light on the hidden jewels that lie within.

Or imagine another scenario: You've written a plot episode that you really like. But when you read it over, it lacks the tension for which you're looking. So you call me. I'll offer a few ideas or lessons about technique that will create the needed drama!

These spur of the moment connections often will enable you to transform your stumbles into success!
