Mystery Writing: Understanding Point Of View In Your Scene
Who is the man taking photos from the car? It he the detective or the murderer? What is he viewing? How important is what he sees to the crime or the solving of the crime?
Is someone else watching the man with the camera? Is he being set up? What are his thoughts, feelings, and memories as he sits in the car taking photos? Are the person or persons in the photos he's taking part of his life or is this just a job? It all depends on point of view!
Point of View puts you inside your main character's head, heart, and gut — you see the world through the eyes of your character. Point of View is one of the most liberating techniques in fiction writing. It gets you out of yourself and into your character’s imagination, heart, history, and instincts.
